What is in the box

The grindometer plate and two metal scrapers.

Before first use

The plate ships with a protective grease on it, to prevent rust in transit. Clean it with soap and water before you take a reading.

How it works

The central precision cut indent is a channel for the particles to get stuck as the scraper goes over the flat surface. When the streak stops, all remaining particles are larger than the gap between the scraper and the grindometer, showing the smallest particle size.

A section through the channel: the scraper travels left, larger particles catch where the channel becomes shallower than they are, and the streak ends
In section: the channel shallows along its length, and each particle stops where it no longer fits.
Taking a reading: a bead of matcha at the deep end, then one steady pass with the scraper.
